Organizations. The following organizations work to protect the environment. We invite you to explore their web sites. ("Save Crow's Nest" does not necessarily endorse specific positions held by these organizations.)
Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay "is a regional nonprofit organization that builds and fosters partnerships to protect and to restore the Bay and its rivers."
Chapman Forest Foundation initiated and led a campaign to preserve Chapman Forest in Maryland's Charles County. With its 2,000 forested acres and 2 1/4 miles of Potomac River shoreline, Chapman Forest is in some ways similar to Crow's Nest. After a decade of citizen struggle, in 1998 the State of Maryland purchased the entire 2,250-acre property for preservation.
Chesapeake Bay Foundation is "the largest conservation organization dedicated solely to saving the Chesapeake Bay watershed." Their mission is to "Save the Bay" by "reducing pollution, improving fisheries, and protecting and restoring natural resources such as wetlands, forests, and underwater grasses."
Defenders of Wildlife is "dedicated to the protection of all native wild animals and plants in their natural communities." They have threatened to sue Stafford County and the property owners if development of Crow's Nest proceeds.
Friends of the Rappahannock works to "promote the conservation, protection, and enjoyment of the natural, cultural, recreational, scenic and historical values of the Rappahannock River and its tributaries."
Potomac Riverkeeper aims "to protect and restore the Potomac River, from its headwaters in West Virginia to the Chesapeake Bay, through citizen action, advocacy and enforcement."
Prince William Conservation Alliance responds to the pressure of rapid growth by working "to increase the local capacity to assume effective, sustainable stewardship of Prince William's valuable natural and cultural resources."
The Sierra Club works to "explore, enjoy, and protect the planet." You can link directly to local Rappahannock Group (formerly Battlefields Sierra Group), to the the Virginia Chapter, or to the national Sierra Club site.
Trust for Crow's Nest was founded "to raise funds to support the operations and management cost of a wildlife refuge on Crow's Nest."
Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation's Natural Heritage Program has a mission of "conserving Virginia's biodiversity through inventory, protection and stewardship."
